What is a Thyristor Module?

Thyristor modules are basically hybrid integrated devices containing usually two or one semiconductor element (power thyristor) in a modular construction.

SCR Module

The primary function of a thyristor module is to control electric power and current by acting as a switch. Power thyristor modules are used in DC and AC circuits with loads from 20A to 1250A and voltages up to 6500V.

Power thyristor modules are manufactured in standard industrial housing sizes, which simplifies interchangeability of modules from different manufacturers and allows easy integration of the device into existing equipment.

Powerful modules are presented with three different internal component designs: soldered construction – the contact is established by solder layers; bonded construction – the connection between top electrode of the chips and DBCs is realized by bond wires; pressure contact construction – the contact is established by pressure, solder free assembly.

In devices of modular construction, the internal elements are electrically isolated from their metal base, allowing several devices to be placed on a single heat-sink and creating compact assemblies.

Modules are available in several dual and single device topologies for almost all phase control or rectifier applications. Topology of internal connections:

The thyristor module turns on by applying a pulse current to a gate current. However, because it is a latch type semiconductor, the thyristor only turns on when a sustained current (holding current) reaches a set level.

To turn off in a DC circuit, the gate current must be reduced below the holding current or reverse voltage has to be applied using a commutation circuit. In an AC circuit, the pulse current has to be applied to the gate current whenever it is positive, because the gate current falls below the holding current and the thyristor turns off whenever the current alternates.

Thyristor modules are used in various power installations – power and control units, power regulators, AC regulators, inverters, motor starters and controls, temperature controllers of blast furnaces or chemical processes, welding equipment, as well as low voltage soft starters and general purpose power supplies.

Thyristor Modules SKKT series Semikron are monolithic design with dual topology of semiconductor thyristors (thyristor-thyristor type). Used in DC and AC circuits with loads from 20A to 570A and reverse pulse voltages up to 2200V.

Thyristor Modules AMKT series AS ENERGITM are a replacement, a complete analog, an alternative for thyristor modules SKKT Semikron. Used in DC and AC circuits with loads to 570A and reverse pulse voltages up to 2200V.

Thyristor Modules MT3, MT4, MT5 series AS ENERGITM

Power Thyristor Modules MT3, MT4, MT5 series AS ENERGITM are a monolithic design with two semiconductor thyristors (type thyristor-thyristor). Modules used in DC and AC circuits with loads from 115A up to 1250A and reverse pulse voltages up to 6500V.

The two-position modules have different switching circuits: MT3half-bridge (common anode-cathode); MT4common cathode circuit; MT5common anode circuit.

High energy-thermocyclic resistance and reliable operation of low-frequency thyristor modules of MT3, MT4, MT5 when switching high currents is achieved due to their design features and stable parameters galvanic separation.

Thyristor Modules MTC series AS ENERGITM

Power Thyristor Modules MTC, MTK, MTA series AS ENERGITM are housed in an industry-standard housing with dual topology of semiconductors (two switches): thyristor-thyristor type. Used in DC and AC circuits with loads to 1200A and reverse pulse voltages up to 3600V. The thyristor modules are characterized by high electrical and thermal cycling capability, meaning high reliability and long lifetime in intensive operation modes.

Thyristor modules have different switching circuits (electrical circuit diagrams): МТChalf-bridge (common anode-cathode); МТKcommon cathode; МТAcommon anode.

Also in the product line of thyristor modules are water-cooled modules – marked with symbol W.

Thyristor Modules VS-VSKT series Vishay Semiconductors are monolithic design with dual or single topology of semiconductor (thyristor-thyristor and single thyristor type). Used in DC and AC circuits with loads from 27A to 500A and reverse pulse voltages from 400V up to 2000V.

The modules have different electrical connection diagrams: half-bridge (common anode-cathode), common cathode, common anode, single thyristor.

Heatsink and Surface Specifications, Preparation

In order to ensure good thermal contact and to obtain the thermal contact resistance values specified in the datasheets, the contact surface of the heat sink must be clean and free from dust particles. It is useful to clean the mounting surface of the heat sink with wipes and an alcohol cleaner, e.g. isopropanol, right before the mounting process. The following mechanical specifications have to be met:
– Unevenness of heat sink mounting area must be ≤ 50μm per 100 mm
– Roughness Rz: < 10 μm
– No steps > 10 μm

Applying Thermal Paste

Recommended to use stencil printing in order to apply thermal interface material. Recommended to use thermal paste thickness in the range from 50 μm to 100 μm. Applying thermal paste by means of roller is not recommended for mass production as reproducible of an optimized thermal paste thickness cannot be guaranteed.

Mounting torque on heat sink MS

To secure power modules, the use of steel screws in combination with suitable washers and spring lock washers or combination screws is strongly recommended. The specified in datasheet torque value must be observed.

A pre-tightening torque and retightening to the given torque value is recommended. For the screwing process the speed has to be limited and soft torque limitation is recommended to avoid torque peaks, which may occur with pneumatic screwdrivers.

The screws must be tightened in diagonal order with equal torque in several steps until the specified torque value MS has been reached.
