Power Rectifier Diodes Stud Type

Power Rectifier Diodes, also known as stud mount rectifier diodes, in stud design are general-purpose diodes, converting DC and AC currents to 500A at frequencies to 500 Hz in circuits with voltages to 3000V (depending on series).

Disc Type Rectifier Diodes have the following types (current): 100 A, 125 A, 160 A, 200 A, 250 A, 320 A, 400 A, 500 Ampere.

Polarity of diodes:

  • forward polarity diode: threaded base - Anode, flexible power lead - Cathode
  • reverse polarity diode: threaded base - Cathode, flexible power lead - Anode

Polarity of the diode is marked by a polarity symbol on the case. Reverse polarity diodes are indicated by an "X" in the code, e.g. "D161-320X-16". On this page are schematic diagrams and circuits of diodes with Anode and Cathode.

Rectifying diodes are one of the most widespread types of power switches. The diode has an industry-standard housing making it easy to integrate the device into existing equipment. The devices have a sealed ceramic housing insulating the semiconductor element from environment.

Air and water heat sinks are used to cool the thyristors. To provide reliable thermal and electrical contact with the heatsink a tightening torque Md must be observed during assembly. For better heat dissipation of thyristor during assembly, heat conducting paste is used.

Installation recommendations for stud type power rectifier diodes:

Assembling stud diode with a heatsink

The reliability of heat transfer and electrical contact between the mating surfaces of the diode and the cooler over the entire temperature range is ensured by appropriate torque.

Before assembly you should perform visual inspection (1) contact surfaces for mechanical damages and wipe (2), soaked with alcohol (toluene, gasoline, acetone).

To improve the parameters of heat transfer it is recommended to lubricate (3) a thin layer of silicone thermal conductive paste before the assembly, which is not a mandatory condition for installation.

After installation, the fasteners (nuts and washers) must be additionally secured against corrosion.


Tips and recommendations for power diodes:

The power diodes should not be operated for long periods of time at their limit load for all parameters. In this case, the safety factor is determined by the required degree of reliability of the device.

Replace a failed power diode with a diode that matches the parameters of the one being replaced.

Supercooling must be provided when operating in an environment with an elevated ambient temperature.

Periodic cleaning of power diodes and coolers to remove dust and contaminants is recommended to ensure proper heat dissipation.

Inductive current dividers (often twisted toroidal wire) should be used to equalize currents between power diodes connected in parallel. The most popular connection methods are closed circuit, common coil circuit, or power diode. The efficiency of current dividers in this case is determined by the cross section of the magnetic wire.

Prevention of voltage unbalance when power diodes are connected in series is achieved by using shunt resistors connected in parallel with each diode. Voltage equalization in transient conditions is provided by connecting capacitors in parallel to each diode.

Device under voltage

It is strictly forbidden to touch power diodes under high voltage during operation.

I'm Gizem, I'm a chemical engineer. I'm interested in making ceramic stuffs as a hobby. Would you please give some explanation about my questions below;
1) If I only mix SiO2 and Fe2O3 (3:1), can i get a suitable product without using other components?
2) Can i use water as fastener? or would you suggest me another fastener?
3) At which temperature should i mix them?

Hello, Gizem. The mass of ceramic is produced by grinding and mixing with water of different components: clay, feldspar, sand, kaolin. The proportions of these materials are different percentages, depending on what and with what characteristics you need to get a ceramic mass.
Each manufacturer of ceramic mass has its own recipes and its own raw materials, which are available in its region.
There are also books on ceramics that specify the chemical composition and approximate recipes for ceramic masses.
